Oh my Zamba!

Map locator of Zambales... now I know

The first surf trip and spot I went was in Zambales, around the month of April. It would probably take you 3-4 hours to get to there in San Narciso, Zambales if you are to take off from Manila and that is if you have a private ride which we had that time. If you plan of commuting, it will probably take you 6 hours or more depending on the time of take off, traffic and couple of stops.

That time I did not know what to expect. I didn't even know where in the map of the Philippines is Zambales. All I know is that its near Olongapo City. I have no sense of directions. What matters to me when I travel is I got money, cellphone, and the guts to ask for directions. This time I'm only a passenger so there I'm cool with it.

I know that when you surf you got to have a good balance.  So, I kind of imagined my self trying to balance on the aisle of a full pack provincial bus without holding on to something. That I could do well. On our way my friends were talking about their experiences on surfing which I had a bit of a hard time relating to that time. I said to my self I wish I had done my research before hand so I decided to sleep on the rest of the trip.

Mary Now Surfs

Even as a kid I always admired the ocean. It fascinates me how the wind can carry the waves to the beach shore. How sand form shapes. Why the ocean becomes shallow in the early morning and becomes deeper later over the day. I love the smell of the sea. I enjoyed the breeze and the touch of sun on my skin. I take pleasure swimming on its water, drifting and floating as the waves carry my weightless body.

When I was younger I always have dreams of drowning, which I guess was one of my biggest fears that time.  At nine, I experienced drowning. I did not realize that ocean floor can become shallow and then deeper with only one step. With that traumatic experience, I promised myself that I will learn how to swim on deeper water and so I did and the scary dreams have disappeared.
